PONDA: Due to incessant rains in Ponda, last-minute shopping for Ganesh Chaturthi has been disrupted, dampening the spirits of both vendors and customers at the Ponda Market.

People are waiting for the rains to recede to flock to the market as the festival is just four days away.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a time when various household goods are in demand, providing business opportunities for vendors and shop owners.

However, the heavy rains have affected the businesses of vegetable vendors, who usually earn maximum profits during this festival.

Rekha Naik, a vegetable vendor at Ponda Market said, “Since the past three to four days, the rains have spoiled the spirit of people as one cannot go shopping in the rains. This has affected the businesses. Chaturthi is the time when vendors make maximum profits as customers go on a shopping spree.”

Meanwhile, farmers from the Ponda taluka are disappointed as their monsoon vegetable cultivation was destroyed by heavy rain in July, impacting their earnings.

The farmers complained that they will be able to sell a few vegetables this time and added that they have sent applications to the Agriculture Department seeking compensation for crop damage.
