Several minor accidents were reported on the Margao-Raia road after an unexpected rainstorm on Tuesday evening caused leachate to seep out of the Sonsoddo garbage dump. The resulting slick layer of waste material on the road led to multiple two-wheeler riders skidding and falling. The busy stretch, which connects Margao with Raia, Curtorim, and other areas, became dangerously slippery, prompting firemen to rush to the scene to wash away the foul-smelling slurry from the road.
Gill Souza, a firefighter on the scene, reported that moving vehicles were spreading the leachate, exacerbating the hazardous conditions. "At least 10 to 12 bikes have fallen," he confirmed. Local residents have also voiced concerns about the growing safety risks. Roque Mascarenhas, a local resident, warned that the slippery road posed a significant danger to pedestrians as well.
Moreno Rebello, another local, expressed frustration with the authorities, criticizing the BJP government and the area's MLA for neglecting the issue. "This ground problem has been conveniently ignored, and it’s affecting the safety of everyone who uses this road," he said.
With the road conditions continuing to deteriorate, locals are calling for immediate action to address the ongoing issue and prevent further accidents.
