A growing rat infestation at Mega Mart in Ponda has raised serious concerns about hygiene and food safety, prompting the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to launch an inspection at the retail outlet.
According to staff at the mart, rats have become a daily nuisance, with employees alleging a lack of effective pest control. The situation has reportedly become so severe that workers are now forced to wear gloves and masks while on duty to avoid contamination.
The issue escalated when a hairless rat was allegedly spotted within the premises, alarming both employees and customers. The sighting triggered immediate public complaints and led to the intervention of health authorities.
“The rat problem has been going on for a while now, but management has not taken it seriously,” said one staff member, speaking on condition of anonymity. “We handle food and essential goods daily—this puts everyone at risk.”
The FDA has since begun an on-site inspection to assess sanitary conditions and ensure that the mart complies with health regulations. Findings from the inspection are expected to determine whether further action, including penalties or temporary closure, will be required.
Local consumers are expressing disappointment and urging stricter enforcement. “We trust these places to be safe, especially when buying food items. This is unacceptable,” said a regular customer.
As investigations continue, the spotlight remains on Mega Mart’s management to take immediate corrective steps to restore customer confidence and ensure a hygienic shopping environment.
