At the threshold of entrance to the village of Siolim-Sodiem, there are gaping potholes dotting the road right from Cunchelim onwards. It is just difficult for pedestrians to walk and motorists to drive on the road. The road is narrow and commuting on this road that is dotted with potholes is really painful. With the slightest downpour, water gets accumulated into the potholes and riders find it difficult to travel and often end up falling and injuring themselves. The vehicles too are damaged and maintenance costs are high. Sometimes the accidents too are serious.
When one drives or rides on the road, we expect the road to be in a good condition.
The government often comes with the standard answer of blaming the "unprecedented rains" for the bad condition of roads. The authorities then follow the routine exercise every year - by repairing the roads by Ganesh Chaturthi only after there is a huge public outcry. They make public announcements that action will be 'initiated' against contractors responsible for the bad condition of the roads however nothing concrete happens.
Taxpayers who shell out money from their pocket to pay road tax and to fill the ever empty coffers of the government just cannot afford to have potholed roads as a feature every monsoon. It is high time the authorities repair this road here before it claims precious lives.
