Residents in Mapusa and Calangute Struggle with Muddy Water Supply, Demand Urgent Action from PWD

Residents in several parts of Mapusa, Calangute, and other Bardez areas have been grappling with reddish-brown, muddy water flowing from their taps for days, sparking serious concerns about public health and water safety.

Despite repeated complaints to the Public Works Department (PWD) water division, the problem remains unresolved, leaving families dependent on packaged water even for basic needs. Locals say the contaminated water is unfit for drinking or cooking, and boiling does nothing to remove the discoloration.

“For the last several days, we have been receiving reddish water. Even after boiling, the colour stays the same,” shared a resident of Calangute.

Mapusa councillor Kamal D’Souza questioned whether the water was being properly treated, while Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Priya Mishal confirmed that last week’s supply was indeed muddy, likely due to increased turbidity during the monsoon. She said the situation had improved in some areas but remains unresolved in others.

With no immediate solution in sight, Congress workers met local PWD officials to demand urgent corrective measures and warned they would launch a protest if clean water supply was not restored promptly.
