Retrenched mining workers, Pilgao ryots unhappy over compensation offer

BICHOLIM: The issues faced by farmers of Sarmanas, Pilgao and the workers laid off by the Vedanta Limited remained unresolved.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had announced a settlement offering workers 35 days of gratuity annually instead of 15 days. Mayem MLA Premendra Shet, company representatives and farmers were present.

After the meeting, Shet stated that discussions with the company management regarding farmers’ concerns are ongoing. However, farmers expressed dissatisfaction, emphasising they would not accept verbal compensation rates and demanded written guarantees.

Meanwhile, the High Court of Bombay at Goa on Monday allowed miscellaneous civil application for intervention filed by Pilgao farmer Babaji Gaonkar. Senior counsel Norma Alvares represented the farmer. The matter will be heard on Tuesday, December 17. However, the mining company has continued transportation e-auctioned iron roe through the main road.
