Roman Script Already in Use Alongside Devanagari, NEP Task Force Didn't Specify 'Romi Konkani': CM Sawant

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has clarified that the Task Force on the National Education Policy (NEP) recommended the use of the Roman script — referring broadly to the English alphabet (A, B, C) — and not specifically the ‘Romi Konkani’ script.

Speaking on the ongoing debate surrounding Konkani scripts in education, Sawant stated, “The Roman script referred to in the NEP Task Force report is the general English alphabet, not Romi Konkani. Moreover, Roman script is already being implemented in education along with Devanagari.”

The clarification comes amid rising public discourse and demands for official recognition of Romi Konkani, especially within the Goan Catholic community and other proponents of the Roman script for Konkani literature and education.

Sawant reiterated that both scripts — Roman and Devanagari — are already in parallel use in various educational and cultural platforms in the state. He urged stakeholders not to misinterpret the NEP recommendations and assured that all linguistic communities would be represented and respected in the state’s education reforms.
