PANJIM: The Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) has finally invited tender from the contractors registered in the PWD for the upgradation of playground and Indoor Hall at Sao Mathias at Tiswadi.

According to sources, the upgradation work, which will cost approximately Rs 2.71 crore, is to be completed within 300 days. The last date for submission of the tender document is November 4 while the tender (technical bid) will be opened online on November 5. 4.

The SAG has also invited tenders for construction of Indoor Hall along with Gymnasium at Village School Playground at Cumbharjua. The construction which will cost approximately Rs 3.3 crore is to be completed within 300 days.

The multipurpose sports hall of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) was inaugurated in December 2016 at Sao Mathias, Divar. However, eight years down the line, the sports hall has turned into a white elephant and is not put to use for the purpose it was built for.

Panch Prashant Harvalkar said, " The hall was inaugurated in 2016 but it was not put to use for the purpose it was constructed for as the government did not provide the other facilities required for a sports complex. However, now tendering has been done for its upgradation. Recently, Sports Minister Govind Gaude had visited the place this year and assured that required facilities will be provided. We now hope that the facilities will be provided and the hall and the ground can be used for sports purpose."

Agnelo Menezes, a local, said,” After inauguration, the hall remained like a white elephant. There were many sports ministers but attention was not paid towards renovation of the building. The venue is used mostly for organising events like gram sabhas instead of it being used for sports activities.”
