Sanguem Family Attacked in Cavre Pirla Over Mining Dispute; FIR Filed After Delay

Sanguem, Goa – April 2025: A group of 15–16 individuals allegedly assaulted Mithil Desai and his family at their residence in Cavre Pirla, Sanguem, in what is believed to be a fallout of an ongoing dispute related to laterite mining operations in the area.

Following the violent incident, Desai initially approached Quepem Police Station to lodge a complaint. However, according to the family, no First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the time, leading them to escalate the matter to the South Goa Collector’s office in Margao to seek urgent police protection.

An FIR was finally registered at 10:30 PM yesterday at the Quepem Police Station. Rekha Desai, Mithil Desai’s mother, formally filed the complaint against nine identified individuals and four unknown persons.

During the alleged attack, both Mithil’s brother and mother sustained injuries, further intensifying the family's plea for justice and security. The Desai family claims the assault is directly tied to tensions surrounding laterite extraction in Cavre Pirla, which has been a source of local conflict in recent months.

Authorities are now investigating the matter, and the police have assured appropriate action following the FIR.
