The condition of both the old and new Sanguem market buildings has become a serious concern for residents and visitors alike. Garbage is strewn across the area, creating a pervasive foul stench that is hard to ignore.
In the fish market section, clogged and reeking gutters further worsen the situation, posing significant health risks.
Many gutters are left uncovered, making them hazardous for the public—particularly during peak market hours. Frustrated residents have pointed fingers at the municipal council, criticising its total inaction. Even the situation is such that animals have found shelter in the market. Similarly, the locals alleged that in the fish market people urinate wherever they find convenient and there is no one to question them.
Gutters designed to drain wastewater are choked and overflowing, releasing a persistent, noxious odour. Stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Children, senior citizens, and even vendors are at constant risk of injury due to these open gutters.
People alleged that the municipality is only interested in collecting sopo, but does nothing.
Speaking to O Heraldo, Meshu D’Costa, Councillor, said earlier a clean-up drive was undertaken, but the situation has remained the same.
“We do not know how many times we have to repeat the same thing. The gutter has been infested with insects. These insects sit on chickens, meat and fish sold in the market. We can understand the market is in unhygienic condition,” he said.
“Even in the nearby area there is an institution where children go for tuition. We talk about dengue, malaria and awareness talks are delivered on what should be done and what not,” he added.
