Sankhali’s Fishermen Struggle Amid Rising Challenges

Published on

Sankhali fish vendors are battling severe hardship as their business continues to nosedive due to several compounding problems. The proliferation of roadside fish sellers along the Sankhali-Bicholim route has sharply eroded their customer base, drawing buyers away with easy access and competitive prices. Regular vendors have found their livelihoods threatened, as patrons increasingly opt for these roadside stalls rather than visiting the dedicated fish market.

One of the underlying issues is the lack of visible signboards or proper directions leading customers to the Sankhali fish market. Newcomers and casual buyers often remain unaware of the market’s location, further reducing footfall. Vendors feel this absence of signage is a critical barrier, especially for those hoping for walk-in customers during peak hours. Their appeals for clear directional boards have gone unaddressed for months.

The physical state of the market shed itself adds to the vendors’ woes. The infrastructure is sorely lacking: the market stands in neglect with little to no cleanliness, resulting in unhygienic conditions that deter buyers. There is no reliable water supply to clean stalls or ensure basic sanitation, and the lack of proper toilet facilities especially disadvantages female vendors and visitors, making daily operations a struggle.

The vendors have urgently appealed to local authorities for intervention, a comprehensive improvement plan covering regular maintenance, installation of water and toilets, and the placement of prominent boards to guide customers. Without prompt action, Sankhali’s fish market risks fading into obscurity, leaving many local families in economic distress.
