Bicholim MLA Chandrakant Shetye on Thursday strongly urged the government to take immediate and decisive action to address the growing menace of stray cattle on Goa’s roads. Speaking during Zero Hour, the MLA emphasised the urgent need to enforce strict penalties on negligent cattle owners, improve road safety infrastructure, support local gaushalas, and involve local bodies and the community in ensuring safer roads — especially during nighttime, when poor visibility heightens the risk of accidents.
Shetye raised concerns over the increasing fear and anxiety among citizens due to the frequent presence of stray cattle on highways and major roads across the state. He pointed out that this issue has already resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities, posing a significant threat not only to daily commuters but also to Goa’s reputation as a safe and tourist-friendly destination.
Despite the existence of initiatives like the Goa Stray Cattle Management Scheme, Shetye noted that poor implementation and enforcement have only exacerbated the problem.
“I urge the House to take immediate action by enforcing strict penalties on negligent cattle owners, improving road safety infrastructure, supporting local gaushalas, and ensuring active participation from local bodies and the community to protect lives and restore safety on our roads, especially during vulnerable nighttime hours,” he reiterated.
