PANJIM: The family members of a deceased patient levelled charges of medical negligence against Manipal Hospitals, Dona Paula, on Wednesday, claiming that complications arising out of wrong treatment led to her death.
The hospital put out a statement that the patient’s condition deteriorated despite the doctors’ best efforts, resulting in her death. The Panjim police said that they have registered a case of unnatural death and an autopsy will be conducted on Thursday.
The son of the deceased, Viraj Chodankar from Siolim, said that his mother had been admitted to Manipal on August 11 and two doctors conducted a laser biopsy on her. He claimed that doctors performed a surgery on her on August 14 after they allegedly told him that they had made a mistake during the laser procedure. “One doctor told me that the laser had touched her large intestine, while another said that medical equipment had led to the complication. They also told me that the patient had jaundice and pneumonia,” he said.
Chodankar has also given his statement to the police
Chodankar said that his mother was in the hospital for more than one-and-half months. “ The Hospital used the October 2 holiday to declare her dead because no post-mortem could be conducted on that day. Thursday’s post-mortem will reveal the cause of death,” he said.
