PANJIM: The gang behind the daylight attack that left Mandrem ex-sarpanch Mahesh Konadkar bloodied and battered on Wednesday has been nabbed in Karwar, Karnataka, while they were fleeing from Goa.

Konadkar was thrashed with iron rods by a group of five men while he was getting back after dropping his daughter to school. The attack on a man with two decades in politics has sent shockwaves through the North Goa beach belt and is widely believed to be the fallout of a turf war between rival MLA’s from the area. After the attack, Konadkar had said that he had also been threatened back in June.

After the PI of Mandrem Police Station was summarily transferred out following the incident, the heat was on the police to crack the case soon. According to the cops, special teams had been formed at the district level to nab those behind the attack.

Police said that the six accused who were caught have been identified as Vishwanath Harijan from Old Goa, Suresh Naik from Porvorim, Sairaj Govekar from Maina-Pilerne, Franky Nadar from St Cruz, Manish Hadfadkar from Chorao and Uddesh Shetty from Panjim.

On Thursday, Mandrem Police had arrested Pundalik Harijan and seized the vehicle allegedly used to ferry the attackers.
