South Goa Collector Egna Cleetus has taken decisive action to protect public safety by ordering the sealing of shops in a Margao building on Thursday. This follows a series of alarming structural failures in the area, raising serious concerns about building safety.
Recently, parts of the Holy Family and Antao Buildings in Margao collapsed, including balconies and, more recently, the gallery of the Holy Family building—posing a grave risk to pedestrians and vehicles below. In response, the administration had already ordered the demolition of two buildings in the area.
Citing the urgency of the situation, Collector Cleetus stated that sealing the shops is a precautionary measure to restrict access to potentially hazardous areas. The move is aimed at preventing accidents while assessments and repairs—or demolitions—are underway.
Some tenants have committed to carrying out necessary repairs to stabilize the affected buildings. However, the Collector emphasized that all repair work must meet established safety standards and will be subject to oversight by relevant authorities.
The district administration remains firm in its commitment to public safety and has stated that further measures, including demolition, will be taken if needed to prevent any future incidents caused by unsafe structures.
