South Goa Member of Parliament (INC), Captain Viriato Fernandes, has raised concerns regarding the proposed reopening of schools during the peak summer months of April and May. The MP took the issue to the Honorable Education Minister in Delhi, submitting a detailed five-page memorandum that outlines the reasons why schools in Goa should not reopen during this time.

In his memorandum, Fernandes highlighted the severe challenges posed by the extreme heat during these months, particularly in the state of Goa, where temperatures soar to uncomfortable levels. He pointed out that schools in Goa have traditionally concluded their academic year by the first week of April, both pre- and post-liberation, and that reopening schools in the intense summer heat does not make sense.

The concerns echoed by parents, who also submitted a memorandum to the MP, include the lack of adequate infrastructure to cope with the sweltering temperatures, making the reopening of schools in April a potential safety issue. Fernandes emphasized that the high temperatures could negatively impact the health and well-being of students and staff alike.

Captain Fernandes has urged the Education Minister to reconsider the reopening dates, suggesting that the school year be scheduled more appropriately, taking into account the unique climate conditions of Goa. He stressed that prioritizing students’ comfort and safety is crucial to ensuring a productive and healthy learning environment.
