South Goa Member of Parliament, Captain Viriato Fernandes, has made strong statements criticizing both the state and central governments, asserting that democracy is under severe threat in Goa and across India. Addressing the media, Captain Fernandes expressed grave concerns over what he termed as the "systematic crushing" of democratic values and institutions. He accused the government of acting out of panic, resorting to undemocratic measures to silence dissent and opposition voices.
According to Captain Fernandes, the current administration’s policies are having a devastating impact on the middle class and lower middle class. “The government is crushing the middle class and the lower middle class. Inflation is hitting the roof, there are no jobs, and there is economic mismanagement due to the wrong policies of the Centre,” he stated. He highlighted that the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities have made daily life extremely difficult for ordinary citizens, who are struggling to make ends meet.
The MP further alleged that the government’s economic mismanagement has led to an alarming unemployment crisis, with youth and skilled professionals unable to find suitable jobs. Fernandes argued that instead of addressing these pressing issues, the government is focusing on silencing critics and stifling democratic debate. He warned that such actions are eroding the very foundations of India’s democracy.
Captain Fernandes called for urgent corrective measures, demanding that the government prioritize the welfare of the people over political interests. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and raise their voices against injustices, emphasizing the need to protect democratic values for the future of the nation.
