South Goa Member of Parliament (INC), Captain Viriato Fernandes, has called for the recognition of Tiatr, the traditional Goan theatre art form, by UNESCO as a cultural and heritage treasure. Speaking during the zero hour in Parliament, Fernandes urged the Ministry of Culture to establish a task force in collaboration with the Government of Goa and members of the Tiatr community to facilitate the process of securing UNESCO inscription for Tiatr.
In his address, Fernandes presented four key demands aimed at supporting the Tiatr community and ensuring its preservation for future generations:
Grants, Scholarships, and Pensions for the Tiatr Community
Fernandes emphasized the need for financial support to ensure the well-being and sustainability of those involved in Tiatr, including grants, scholarships, and pensions for artists, playwrights, musicians, and support staff.
Global Outreach of Tiatr
He proposed the engagement of the Goan diaspora to help spread Tiatr across the globe, enhancing its visibility and bringing this unique art form to international audiences.
Promotion of Research and Academic Collaborations
The MP highlighted the importance of encouraging national and international research on Tiatr. He suggested the need for academic collaborations and the digital archiving of Tiatr performances to preserve its historical, artistic, and socio-cultural significance.
Development of a Policy Framework for Tiatr Artists
Fernandes called for the development and implementation of a policy framework that supports the artists and professionals involved in Tiatr. This would include financial assistance through grants and heritage promotion programs, as well as provisions for pensions and other benefits.
Captain Viriato Fernandes’ initiative aims to elevate Tiatr as a key part of Goan cultural heritage and secure its place in the global cultural landscape, ensuring that this rich tradition continues to thrive for future generations.
