PANJIM: The Cyber Crime Branch of Goa Police on Sunday cautioned the people of Goa against a surge in matrimonial scams targeting unmarried women.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Cyber Crime, Rahul Gupta, warned the public, especially unmarried women, of unknown individuals posing as an NRI and trying to befriend them through social media platforms.
The SP said, “The scammers specifically target unmarried women, claiming to be NRIs. They will befriend you on Facebook or may be on Instagram and make marriage proposals. The unmarried woman may fall into the trap as the offer may be alluring.”
“The scammer will claim that he is coming to India with some gifts or to make a formal proposal. But he may call from an airport pretending to have been arrested by a law enforcement agency and claim to be in need of money. He may request the woman to help him. Emotionally-attached woman may ultimately send the money.”
“Do not fall prey to such traps. One should always be cautious and avoid sending money to such fraudsters,” SP Gupta cautioned.
Earlier, the Cyber Crime Branch had appealed to the people not to download fake loan apps and fall prey to the deceptive tactics of such loan app companies.
It had also urged citizens to refrain from interacting with unknown or unverified contacts online, warning that fraudsters may use the fake video calls to entrap people, mostly men, in compromising situations and subsequently blackmail them for money.
