PANJIM: Although the civic bodies are responsible for keeping the cities and towns clean, a special Swachh Bharat Mission was launched, spending crores of rupees. However, the stubborn problem of garbage dumping does not seem to go away.
On the Occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, many leaders launched cleanliness drives within their constituencies. But this seems to be a case of 364 days garbage and 1 day of cleaning.
On Gandhi Jayanti Day, Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho inaugurated a Manned Transfer Station at the Chicolna bus stop. He launched launched an eco-friendly ‘Potti’, a cloth bag initiative.
The people or even passersby can drop their dry garbage at the Manned Transfer Station. It is particularly convenient for passersby who can drop off their garbage at the station The Manned Transfer Station, will initially focus on collecting dry waste, and it will be supervised by an on-site attendant. Waste materials, such as plastic and bags, will be segregated at the centre to facilitate recycling efforts.
This project would be replicated across the State to prevent littering on the roads, he said.
Under 'Poti’ scheme an initiative by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), the people can donate their old and unused clothes and in exchange they will be given a reusable cloth bag. This will encourage the revival of cloth bag usage, and will promote eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags. Often people used to burn their old and unused clothes thereby adding to pollution. This effort will help reduce plastic pollution in the State.
