PANJIM: Ratan Tata is celebrated not just for his business acumen but also for his deep compassion for animals. His enduring love for dogs, in particular, has led to impactful changes across Mumbai.
In a major milestone, Tata recently inaugurated the Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi area. The Rs 165 cr, state-of-the-art facility features over 200 beds and round-the-clock emergency care, setting a new standard in pet healthcare.
“Pets are our family, and their lives matter to every pet parent,” Tata remarked, explaining his motivation for the project.
Tata’s personal commitment to animals was evident in 2018 when he chose to skip a prestigious event at Buckingham Palace, where he was to receive a lifetime achievement award, because his beloved dog, Tito, had fallen ill.
His compassion extends to Mumbai’s landmarks as well. In 2018, he ensured that stray dogs found shelter at the Tata Group’s Bombay House headquarters, which was redesigned to include a special space for strays, complete with climate control and comfortable beds. More recently, he directed Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Hotel to treat stray animals with respect, making entry for strays ‘free’.
His actions have not only improved the lives of many animals but have also inspired others to adopt a more humane approach toward our four-legged friends, highlighting the true impact of compassion in business and society.
Ratan’s beloved dog ‘Goa’ bids adieu to him
PANJIM: At the funeral of industrialist Ratan Tata, a heartfelt moment unfolded when his beloved dog, ‘Goa’, came to pay his final respects. The loyal companion had been with Tata for 11 years, symbolising a deep bond between
the two.
The story behind ‘Goa’ is a touching one. During a visit to Goa, Tata encountered a stray dog that began following him around. He decided to adopt him and brought him to Mumbai, naming him ‘Goa’. Since then, the dog has lived at Bombay House, alongside other strays that Tata provided a home for.
A caretaker said Goa was ‘very close’ to Tata. When photographers jostled to click Goa’s pictures, the caretaker urged them to let the pet go, saying the dog had not eaten anything since morning.
Tata has often shared pictures of himself with ‘Goa’ and other dogs on Instagram. The presence of ‘Goa’ at his funeral is a testament to the mutual love and respect they shared, marking an emotional farewell to a true animal lover.
