In response to the increasing number of road accidents linked to stray cattle, the Thivim Panchayat has decided to launch a dedicated campaign aimed at addressing the growing menace. With cattle often seen wandering or resting on roads—especially during the night and monsoon seasons when visibility is low—authorities are taking decisive steps to improve road safety and civic order in the village. The initiative comes after mounting concerns from residents and commuters about the threat posed by unclaimed cattle roaming freely on public roads. The issue has become particularly pressing in recent months, with several nearmiss incidents and reported accidents involving vehicles and cattle. To combat the problem, the Panchayat has announced a phased campaign that includes the identification and removal of stray cattle. Animals found on the roads will be relocated to designated goshalas (cattle shelters), following a notice period issued to villagers. Speaking to the media, Thivim Sarpanch Michael Fernandes emphasized that cattle owners will be given an eight-day window to take responsibility for their animals. During this period, the Panchayat will make public announcements urging residents to bring their cattle home and prevent them from straying onto roads. “There are many cattle found on the road, but nobody comes forward to claim ownership. Many are seen sitting in groups on the road at night, posing a serious risk to motorists. We feel helpless if accidents occur,” Fernandes said. He further explained the steps the Panchayat plans to take: “We have decided to write to the goshalas and ask them to send their teams to assist with the relocation. But before that, we will make announcements urging people to claim their animals. We will also conduct an awareness campaign. If no one comes forward and we find any animals on the road, they will be moved to the goshalas.” Beyond immediate removal efforts, the Panchayat is also focused on raising awareness among local residents about the dangers of stray cattle and the legal responsibilities of cattle ownership
