MARGAO: During the Tiatr Awards presentation, NRI Commissioner Adv Narendra Sawaikar praised the significant role played by the tiatr fraternity in fostering societal change and urged tiatrists to mentor the younger generation by promoting positive values through their performances. He emphasised that tiatr serves as an influential platform for social awareness, helping to shape a better society.
On Thursday, the Tiatr Academy-Goa celebrated the birth anniversary of Late Rosario Rodrigues, recognised as the father of khell-tiatr, at Ravindra Bhavan in Margao. Addressing the gathering, Sawaikar, along with guest of honour Menino Fernandes (alias Menin de Bhandar) and Anthony Barbosa, President of the Tiatr Academy-Goa, highlighted the crucial role of tiatrists in safeguarding Goa’s rich cultural heritage.
Sawaikar also urged the Tiatr Academy-Goa to publish some of the scripts written by the late Rosario Rodrigues to preserve his contributions to the tiatr stage, ensuring that his literary legacy is recognised and appreciated by future generations. Menino Fernandes highlighted the role the late Rosario Rodrigues played in nurturing new artists and directors, stating, “There are several artists who owe their careers to him.”
Barbosa announced that the process for establishing ‘Tiatr Bhavan’ has already begun, with the goal to complete the project within the next three years. He said that the Academy is formulating a group insurance scheme for tiatrists.
During the event, Maria Amelia Socorinha, Antonio Xavier Fernandes, and Agnelo Joao Fernandes were honoured with lifetime achievement awards in recognition of their contributions to khell-tiatr. Prizes for the 4th All Goa Inter-College and 2nd All Goa School Tiatr Competitions were distributed by the dignitaries.
