VASCO: In a tragic incident, a 34-year-old tourist from Bengaluru died off the Baina beach on Sunday afternoon after he reportedly indulged in water sports.
The victim has been identified as Sanjay Shrinivas.
Shrinivas along with his wife and a minor child had come on a boat from Nerul to Baina to participate in water sports activity and scuba diving.
He did parasailing at sea and after that, the boat reached the Grand Island where he was to carry out scuba diving. However, he felt uneasy and began to choke on board the boat and tried to vomit.
But his condition worsened and he collapsed. The other tourists onboard and crew cried for help and another nearby boat was called for help and Shrinivas was shifted on the boat and was brought to the Baina shore, where he was given oxygen and CPR was tried.
Shrinivas was immediately rushed in an ambulance to the Sub-District Hospital, Chicalim, where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Meanwhile, Baina Watersports Association chairman and former MLA, Carlos Almeida clarified that the tourist participated in water sports activities at Dona Paula and later arrived at Grand Island for scuba diving. It was during this time that he reportedly felt unwell and began to choke.
“Our Association boat was nearby when the agent (Ajay Rathod) requested our assistance and we immediately helped to transfer the tourist to Baina beach, from where he was taken to Sub-District Hospital, Chicalim,” Almeida said.
Almeida has assured the public that all water sports activities in the State including at Baina beach, are conducted legally and with safety measures in place.
“I want to tell everyone that there is nothing illegal and we are doing water sports as per law across all locations in North and South Goa. We want to reassure the people that water sports activity is safe and there is nothing to worry,” he said
