Traditional Fishermen in Benaulim Seek Government Help for Boat Parking and Fish Drying Facilities

Traditional fishermen in Benaulim are calling on the Goa government to address long-standing issues related to the lack of designated space for drying fish and safe parking for boats during the monsoon season. The community, which has relied on fishing for generations, says the absence of basic infrastructure is threatening their livelihood.

Speaking to reporters, local fisherman Pele Fernadies voiced frustration over the government's inaction. “Fishermen in Colva have been given land for drying fish. Why are we being ignored? Many women in our community are involved in the fish drying business, and they have no proper place to work,” he said.

Fernadies added that the community had previously met with the Chief Minister, who had agreed to allow them to park their boats in a fisheries department-owned area. However, he alleged that the Fisheries Minister later backtracked, stating that the land would be auctioned instead.

“We will not allow the government to give this land to anyone else without first fulfilling our needs. We demand fair treatment,” he said.

Adding to the call for improved facilities, Anthonio Fernadies, a shack owner, emphasized the need to enhance basic infrastructure to support both fishing and tourism in Benaulim.

“We need a proper public toilet, upgraded parking, better lighting, and a larger designated area for fish drying,” he said. “Most importantly, we need a permanent space to park our canoes and boats safely during the rains.”

The fishermen and tourism stakeholders say they are ready to escalate their demands if the government fails to take prompt action.
