MARGAO: Two temples located close to each other in Canacona taluka have been burgled, with robbers breaking into six donation boxes and stealing cash.
According to the complaint filed by the president of the Shree Damodar Devastan in Loliem-Canacona, unknown individuals gained entry into the locked temple by breaking open the main door and stole Rs 6,000 from the Garbhkudi. The investigation is being led by PSI Ramdas Doifode of the Canacona Police Station, which has registered the offence under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the BNS 2023. No arrests have been made yet.
Sources indicate that the temple priest of Shree Damodar Devasthan discovered the theft upon arriving in the morning to perform puja and subsequently informed the Devasthan committee members.
Police sources reported that five donation boxes at the Keshav Devalaya, dedicated to various deities including Mahadev, Keshav, Brahma Devi, and Maruti, were found broken open, with cash stolen.
The robbers reportedly broke open two doors at Shree Damodar Devasthan, located just 50 to 60 metres from Keshav Devasthan, in addition to the main door and an interior door. They are believed to have used an iron rod to access the Keshav Temple, where they broke open a donation box and stole cash. It was noted that one donation box in the temple remained untouched.
A dog squad and fingerprint analysts have been deployed to assist in the investigation.
