With the Anjuna Police investigating who issued or processed Aadhaar Card to Israeli drug lordYaniv BenaimaliasAtala, the High Court of Bombay at Goa on Thursday adjourned their criminal application (main) to July 7, after the drug lord sought time to file affidavit-in reply.
On Thursday, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), a statutory authority established by the Government of India to issue unique identification numbers (UID), also known as Aadhaar, submitted two sealed envelopes before the Bombay High Court at Goa.
Gaurav Choudhary, Deputy Director of UIDAI, Regional Office, Mumbai, was present in the Court and gave the documents in sealed envelopes to Adv Raviraj Chodankar, the Central government Standing Counsel for both, the UIDAI and the Union government.
Adv Chodankar placed on record under sealed cover documents pertaining to the Aadhaar Card of Atala. After Atala’s lawyer files affidavit-in reply, the Court will decide on the sealed envelope.
The Anjuna Police have approached the High Court after the UIDAI refused to give details of Aadhaar-related documents submitted by Atala, citing that under Section 33 of the Aadhaar Act 2016 (Disclosure of information in certain cases) disclosure of identity information or authentication records cannot by revealed unless directed by a court.
During the last hearing on June 9, the High Court had directed the UIDAI to produce the file containing documents submitted by Atala for obtaining Aadhaar Card.
Atala was arrested by the Anti-Narcotic Cell (ANC) Police in April this year for allegedly possessing 50 grams of cocaine and 110 grams of charas, valued at Rs 8.70 lakh, along with Rs 40,000 in cash.
Police sources said Atala’s passport had two passports and his last entry in India was in 2018 and his travel documents had expired in 2019. However, the Aadhaar Card was furnished to him in August 2021.
