The issue of unregulated tourism activities in Sao Tome and Fontainhas, the Latin Quarters of Panjim, was raised by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai in the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday,
During Zero Hour, Sardesai said that there is fear and anxiety in the minds of residents of Sao Tome and Fontainhas regarding unchecked tourist nuisance, rising lawlessness and slow erosion of heritage. He said that during his Tiswadi outreach programme held ahead of the Assembly session, the residents of Sao Tome and Fontainhas met him and narrated their problems.
According to Sardesai, the residents had complained that tourists and bloggers carry out unregulated activities in these areas, disturbing their peace and privacy. They also cause noise pollution and dirtying their painted houses. A high mast erected by the Department of Tourism is also non-functional. The residents wanted a parking space for two-wheelers and four-wheelers and to allow parking of vehicles of tourists and casino staff to the multi-level pay parking at Patto.
Basically the residents want the sanctity, safety and heritage of Sao Tome and Fontainhas areas to be preserved, the MLA said.
Responding to it, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte admitted that Sao Tome and Fontainhas areas are unique having Portuguese architecture, rich heritage and vibrant landscapes and colourful houses which the department never promoted. The areas were organically developed and later got promoted on social media platforms. It is too highly populated and whenever such incidents occur the people can call tourism helpline 1364, Panjim Police or the CCP officials.
He also assured the Fatorda MLA to hold a joint meeting with the Chief Minister after the conclusion of the ongoing session in this regard.
The residents of Sao Tome and Fontainhas have been demanding to streamline the tourism-related activities in the two areas and to combat the menace of unruly people and to respect the sentiments of the locals.
Recently, the CCP took a decision to deploy wardens in both the localities in order to curb tourist nuisance.
