VASCO: The vendors of the Mormugao Municipal Modern Market expressed their concerns over the increasing presence of illegal roadside businesses in the town, and demanded action against them as it was impacting their livelihoods.
The vendors alleged that the roadside vendors were able to attract more customers, leading to a decline in the footfalls and sales at the municipal market. The vendors have now urged the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to take immediate action against the illegal roadside vendors, ensuring a level playing field for the authorised market vendors.
The protesting vendors stated that enforcement of regulations and crackdown on unauthorised vendors will help to restore the viability of the municipal market and protect the livelihoods of the legitimate vendors.
MMC chairperson Girish Borker informed that the municipality had already started a drive against roadside vendors and it will continue. He said the roadside vendors were taking advantage of absence of municipal staff after evening hours and on Sundays and public holidays. But this will not be tolerated and action will be taken against these unauthorised vendors if found selling their goods on roadsides.
