Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Tuesday conducted a joint inspection near the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) Gates at Baina, accompanied by the Deputy Collector, municipal councillors, police officials, and local residents. The visit followed mounting concerns from locals over safety hazards posed by the compound wall and gates in the area.
Salkar said that residents have been demanding the removal of the gates, fearing they may restrict access and pose safety risks. He added that the MPA had earlier given a written assurance stating that the gates would never be closed.
However, citing the potential for accidents and obstructions, Salkar has now urged the MPA to immediately remove the compound wall near the gates. “The assurance alone is not enough. To ensure public safety and avoid future mishaps, the wall must be dismantled without delay,” he said.
The MLA also stressed the importance of coordination between civic authorities and the port administration to address public safety concerns in a timely and transparent manner.
