Velim Farmers Suffer Crop Losses as Broken Bundhs Remain Unrepaired

Published on

Guirdolina Fernandes, a committed farmer from Velim, has expressed deep frustration over the ongoing neglect by the Panchayat and government authorities in repairing the broken bundhs in her village. These bundhs, crucial for protecting agricultural fields from flooding, have been left unrepaired despite months of heavy monsoon rains, resulting in severe waterlogging and significant crop losses.

Fernandes pointed out that this is not an isolated issue affecting only her land; many farmers in the area are struggling with similar damage due to the authorities’ inaction. She highlighted that the bundhs serve as vital barriers to prevent floodwaters from inundating the fields, yet they have been in a state of disrepair for months.

Despite repeated appeals and requests made to the local Panchayat and government departments, no meaningful steps have been taken to fix the bundhs. The consequences have been devastating for the farming community, with many losing their main source of income as crops are destroyed by floodwaters.

Fernandes urged the authorities to take swift and responsible action, emphasizing the urgent need for immediate repairs before further damage occurs. She also called for long-term planning and improved disaster preparedness to protect farmers’ livelihoods in Velim and the surrounding regions.
