Velsao Farmers Revive Ancestral Fields to Reclaim Goa’s Rural Heritage

In a heartening move to reconnect with their roots, the Velsao Farmers Association has launched a mission to revive ancestral farmlands in the scenic village of Velsao, Goa. Spearheaded by Association President Roquezinho D’Souza, the initiative seeks to restore traditional farming practices, promote community participation, and inspire the younger generation to embrace agriculture.

The association has begun reclaiming long-abandoned fields—once the agricultural lifeline of the village—clearing dense overgrowth, rebuilding bunds, and preparing the land for crops such as paddy and vegetables. These lands had fallen into disuse due to rapid urbanization, shifting lifestyles, and youth migration. Now, with renewed purpose, locals are working together to bring them back to life.

“We must not let our heritage fade,” said D’Souza. “Our ancestors lived off these fields. It’s time for the youth to step up, learn the skills of farming, and carry this legacy forward—not just for food security, but to preserve our identity as a village rooted in agriculture.”

Supporting this vision, Velsao Panchayat member Jim Dsouza shared his personal motivation: “My return to farming was driven by childhood memories of my grandparents working these lands. Reviving them is both an act of remembrance and a commitment to the future.”

The initiative has already stirred enthusiasm among both elders and the younger generation, with many families volunteering their time and energy. The association hopes the movement will also encourage sustainable agricultural practices, boost local food production, and strengthen community ties.

With determination and collective spirit, the Velsao Farmers Association is planting more than crops—they are planting hope for a rural revival, ensuring that the soul of traditional Goan farming continues to thrive.
