Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas on Wednesday urged the State government to formally recommend to the Government of India—particularly the Department of Posts—the issuance of a special commemorative postage stamp in honour ofSt Joseph Vaz, the Patron Saint of Goa.
Raising the matter during Zero Hour in the Assembly, Viegas said, “There is a need to recommend the issuance of a special commemorative postage stamp in honour of St Joseph Vaz, whose life and service exemplify deep faith, compassion, and resilience.”
Highlighting the historical and cultural significance of St Joseph Vaz, the MLA noted that the Saint was born in Benaulim during the Portuguese colonial era and later became one of the most influential missionaries in South Asia, particularly in Sri Lanka, where he carried out his mission during the time of religious persecution.
“Despite being canonized by Pope Francis in 2015 and enjoying widespread reverence across Goa and South Asia, St Joseph Vaz has yet to receive any official philatelic recognition,” Viegas said.
He added that issuing such a stamp would serve as a tribute to a revered missionary and humanitarian while also instilling a sense of pride and cultural identity among the people of Goa.
