Villagers and MLA Protest Against Hughes Precision Manufacturing in Naquerim-Betul Over Explosion Incident

On Friday, residents of Naquerim-Betul Panchayat, joined by Quepem MLA Alton D’Costa, staged a silent protest at the South Goa District Collector’s office, demanding action against Hughes Precision Manufacturing Pvt. Ltd. The protest comes in the wake of a recent explosion at the company’s warehouse, which occurred on March 21, 2025, and was allegedly operating illegally.

The villagers voiced their strong opposition to the establishment of the company in their community, expressing concerns over the safety of their lives and environment. They emphasized that the explosion had put their lives at significant risk and that, despite filing a complaint, no investigation had been conducted into the company’s activities.

Alton D’Costa, speaking during the protest, highlighted the need for an immediate inquiry into the company's operations, which reportedly involve the production of ammunition and storage of explosive materials. He criticized the lack of action by authorities, especially since the company’s licenses have not been suspended following the explosion. “The main purpose of this protest is to open the eyes of the government,” he stated.

The villagers also raised concerns about the potential contamination of nearby freshwater springs during the monsoon season, warning that runoff from the site could pollute vital water sources. This, they pointed out, would pose a severe threat to both human and wildlife populations who depend on the water from these streams.

The protest has drawn attention to the urgent need for government intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of local residents and the environment. The community is demanding a thorough investigation and the immediate suspension of the company’s operations until the situation is resolved.
