QUEPEM: A delegation of concerned citizens and local leaders has issued a strong appeal to Curchorem Police Inspector Pramod Tari, urging immediate action against drug traffickers in the area.
Following a recent accident in Padamol, Quepem, where a youth was killed on the spot and another seriously injured, locals and municipal councillors suspect drug use may have contributed to the crash. A group of citizens and social activists submitted a memorandum at the Curchorem police station, voicing fears about drug abuse, particularly among students, in certain hotspots around Curchorem.
Aditya Desai, a member of the delegation, noted the rise in drug-related incidents, attributing it to the influx of drugs into Curchorem and nearby areas. “We are witnessing the devastating impact of drugs on our young generation,” he said. “It is time for the police to step up enforcement and protect our communities from this growing menace.”
Another member, teacher and parent Abhay Desai, threatened a hunger strike. “If immediate steps are not taken, I have no option but to go on a fast to force action against these peddlers,” he declared.
Goa Forward Party spokesperson Vikas Bhagat urged the police, as well as the state’s Home and Education ministries, to take prompt action, noting that “responsible citizens must act to preserve the culture and dignity of Goa.”
Additionally, Vinesh Prabhu Desai suggested that increased vigilance, including plainclothes police presence, was essential to nix illegal
activities.
