Will Replace Ro-Ro Ferry with Old Vessels if Chorao Locals Oppose It, Says Minister Subhash Phaldesai

Tourism and River Navigation Minister Subhash Phaldesai on Sunday stated that if Chorao residents formally oppose the Ro-Ro ferry service, the government is prepared to withdraw it and reinstate the six traditional ferries that previously operated on the route.

Speaking to the media, Phaldesai said the government won’t incur any financial loss from the move, as the Ro-Ro ferry is not owned by the state. “If the local panchayat and the MLA officially communicate the public’s disapproval, we will respect their decision and replace the Ro-Ro ferry with the six old ferries,” he added.

The minister's remarks come amid growing opposition from locals who claim the Ro-Ro service disrupts traditional livelihoods and creates safety concerns. The Chorao Panchayat is expected to hold a meeting this week to decide on its official stance.

Phaldesai emphasized that the government remains open to public feedback and willing to adapt its transport solutions in line with local sentiments.
