PANJIM: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Friday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not interested in establishing an educational hub but is instead focused on brokering land dealings under the guise of education.
Addressing a press conference, he said, “The government is providing Comunidade lands to private universities, but in return, our youth are not getting employment in these institutions. It looks like the Goa government has ventured into brokerage and is hence leasing out land to private universities to garner ‘bags’. We have seen how this government has done deals in the case of Zuari Agro Chemicals. It is a scam worth crores of rupees. The same formula is now being applied everywhere.”
“I have learnt that thousands of square metres of land belonging to the Captain of Ports at Britona have been leased out to one Ganpat University from Gujarat. Recently, people from Tivim protested against the private university coming to their village, which has sought two lakh square metres of land. The government is giving away our land to these universities, which will not benefit the locals,” he said.
Alemao pointed out that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has stated that
inviting private universities will help create an educational hub, but his
government has failed to maintain the ranking of Goa University.
