High drama unfolded during Question Hour on the first day of the Goa Legislative Assembly’s Monsoon Session, as Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao raised a Point of Order over a coal-related starred question being downgraded to unstarred, sparking strong protests from the Opposition benches.
Alemao accused the government of trying to sidestep scrutiny over a matter involving an alleged ₹3,000+ crore coal scam linked to Adani and Jindal groups. “Why was a question of such public importance downgraded? This is nothing short of a murder of democracy,” Alemao asserted, demanding immediate answers from the treasury benches.
The Opposition backed Alemao's protest, accusing the government of manipulating legislative procedures to avoid accountability on sensitive issues. The atmosphere in the House turned tense as several members joined in the chorus, questioning the Speaker’s discretion.
In response, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar urged members to maintain decorum and allow the Question Hour to proceed smoothly, stating that procedural issues could be discussed at an appropriate time.
The confrontation has set the stage for a combative session, with the Opposition determined to press for transparency and answers on alleged irregularities tied to coal handling and port operations in the state.
