"Who Is Goa’s Pablo Escobar?" – Yuri Alemao Raises Alarming Concerns Over Drug Nexus

Leader of the Opposition, Yuri Alemao, has strongly criticized Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant for treating a major drug seizure in Goa as an “achievement.” Alemao questioned the logic behind celebrating the interception of a INR 43 crore drug consignment, arguing that such large-scale trafficking through Goan borders points to deeper systemic failures rather than success stories.

Speaking out, Alemao said, "What guarantee is there that the value is only INR 43 crore? The drug situation in Goa is spiraling out of control. When I raised this issue in the Assembly, I asked the Chief Minister—who is Goa’s Pablo Escobar?"

Citing recent massive drug hauls in Gujarat and Delhi valued at INR 3,000–INR 4,000 crore, Alemao claimed that Goa is increasingly becoming a hub for narcotics trafficking. He attributed the growing menace of substance abuse in the state to alleged collusion between drug networks and law enforcement agencies.

"Innocent youth are losing their lives due to drug abuse, and this cannot happen without the support of some politicians and police personnel. There’s a complete breakdown in the system," he added, calling for accountability at the highest levels.

Alemao’s remarks have intensified the spotlight on the state’s handling of drug-related crimes and reignited concerns over Goa’s vulnerability as a transit and consumption point in the country’s drug trade.
