MARGAO: Following mounting health complaints from locals impacted by pollution at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, Leader of the Opposition and local MLA Yuri Alemao, has called for a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the industries operating in the town. In a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Alemao highlighted the urgent need for action to address the escalating environmental and health hazards linked to the industrial estate.
Alemao pointed out that in the absence of an Effluent Treatment Plant, fish processing units have been discharging untreated waste into local water bodies, causing severe contamination. “Frequent closure notices issued by the Goa Pollution Control Board (GPCB) emphasise the ongoing violations; however, these closure orders are often swiftly revoked,” Alemao wrote.
In his letter, Alemao also flagged the hazardous waste dumping and pollution caused by steel manufacturing units in the industrial estate. He stressed that water and air pollution have reached critical levels, leading to health problems in the local community.
“Groundwater assessments reveal disturbingly high levels of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), alongside elevated concentrations of nitrates and phosphorus,” Alemao said, adding that the situation has led to eutrophication and a dangerous decline in water quality, making local water bodies unsuitable for human and livestock consumption.
The contamination has contributed to a rise in respiratory ailments and gastrointestinal disorders in Cuncolim, which Alemao believes are linked to the poor air and water quality. He urged the government to respond urgently to safeguard public health.
Alemao also raised concerns about air pollution from steel factories. “GPCB audits have failed to consider the external conditions affecting the community. The grievances of the local residents need to be addressed. We require a coordinated effort to protect both the environment and the well-being of Cuncolim’s residents,” said Alemao.
