Zambaulim Shigmo, a significant cultural event in Goa, begins with the worship of the Holy Sriphal (coconut) at Shri Purushottam Keni's residence in Comba, Margão. This tradition, practiced for over a century, involves placing the sacred coconut at the Comba residence on the Wednesday following Holi. The following Thursday, the coconut is carried in a grand procession to Zambaulim, marking the start of the celebrations. Historical records dating back to 1913 confirm the long-standing nature of this practice.
Once the coconut reaches Zambaulim, the festivities continue for several days. Programs are organized on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, featuring traditional performances and cultural displays. A special mahaprasad is served both in the afternoon and at night, attracting numerous devotees from Margão, who stay in Zambaulim to partake in the celebrations.
On the following Tuesday, the famous Gulal celebration takes place, adding color and vibrancy to the festivities. The eight-day celebration culminates on Thursday, concluding the spiritual and cultural festivities. This unique tradition, as explained by Mohit Keni, holds great cultural significance and is a cherished event in the Goan calendar.
