PANJIM: The State government on Tuesday issued a notification increasing the bus fare which would be effective from Friday, January 11. The notification states that stage carriers and city buses will charge passengers Rs 10 between 0-4 kms and for the next every 8 kms or part thereof, the fare would increase by Rs 5.
The fares for Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited stage carriers, plying point to point with no standing passengers (shuttle services), will be Rs 1.20 per km and air-conditioned service will be Rs 1.25 per km.
The government has maintained that students will be charged concessional bus fare, where they will be eligible for 50 percent of the total bus fare.
The hike comes after persistent demands from the All Goa Private Bus Owners Association, whose members had last October also threatened to agitate if their demands were not met
Bus owner Sudip Tamhankar, who has been vocal about the rights of the bus operators, said the fares had not increased since 2013 but diesel price was upped by Rs 25 while insurance premium and price of bus spare parts, etc also increased.
