Government will have to backtrack if NGT rules against PWD on Borim Bridge: Sequeira

We did not wait for NGT verdict since who will be responsible if anything happens to the old Borim Bridge?

MARGAO: Goa’s Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira has said if the National Green Tribunal rules against the PWD, the Government will have no other option but to backtrack on the Borim Bridge. He admitted the Farmers issue is there, and that they have gone to the National Green Tribunal, so we will have to wait for the case, so let us wait and see, Sequeira said.

Environment Minister after listening to grievances of people at the South Goa Collectorate told media that Aleixo Sequeira the Government has completed land acquisition. He also informed that the design of the new Borim Bridge has been finalized, and presently the tendering process is on.

The PWD is also complying with the Coastal Regulation Zone regulations, he declared.

When asked by media, why the government could not wait for the NGT case to be decided and then proceed with the land acquisition and tendering process, Sequeira shot back saying, “Who will be responsible if anything happens to the Old Borim Bridge?”

When asked what the State Government had done with the Rs 20 crores sanctioned for repairing the Old Borim Bridge, he claimed that the government was monitoring the bridge. He however expressed ignorance about the exact amount received by the State Government from the Central Government.
