PANJIM: The State government is now contemplating to make sewer connections compulsory for all the households in the State.

According to PWD sources, the decision has been taken to make sewer connections compulsory in the State in view of the government expanding sewerage lines at many important places as there was lukewarm response from the people to obtain sewerage connections.

The government has already completed sewerage projects at Margao, Fatorda, Panjim, Porvorim, Ponda and in some of the coastal areas through the Sewerage and Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Limited even as the house sewer connections were low.

The government now intends to put it to use by making sewerage connections mandatory for households irrespective whether or not it has a septic tank.

In the past the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had warned people to disconnect electricity connections of those who refuse to take sewerage connections. He had also stated that people were releasing their sewage into the drains.

The PWD official opined that one of the reasons for the poor response from the people is the high sewerage connection application fees and the monthly charges. The government has now decided to revise the monthly sewerage charges for all domestic and commercial categories, the official said.
