Growing Tensions in Fontainhas: Tourists Disregard Privacy and Local Guidelines
Published on

Fontainhas, the charming "Latin Quarter" of Panjim, showcases beautiful Portuguese-style buildings that attract tourists from all over. Unfortunately, the growing number of visitors has created some friction with the local community, resulting in reports of both verbal and physical altercations.

A lot of tourist litter the place with garbage and dirty the wall paint. If things go out of hand , we are forced to inform the police. Foreign tourists are very disciplined and polite as compared to domestic tourists. Police petrolling is a must in Panjim.

Tourists frequently overlook "No Photography" signs, prioritizing their desire for the ideal photo over the community's privacy and concerns. To tackle this problem, it's essential for the government to step in and implement measures that safeguard the rights and peace of the residents in Fontainhas.

A house located in Fontainhas, the historic "Latin Quarter" of Panaji, features a striking notice that reads: "Photography prohibited in front of this house. You are being watched." Despite this warning, it appears that many tourists frequently disregard it, happily taking photos next to the sign.

‘Many of the issues we face could be addressed if we had wardens to enforce the rules. I've shared my thoughts with the mayor about giving more authority to the wardens or another group to start issuing fines to tourists who don't follow the guidelines. Sometimes, they even block the roads by sitting or standing in the middle, which disrupts traffic’, says Clifton Afonso, a local resident.

He also mentions that the signage on Google Maps should be removed, as it directs tourists to the area in question. He emphasizes that the police must work to maintain law and order in the neighborhood. The collector has installed signs indicating that this is a 'No motorized vehicle zone,' but unfortunately, there is no enforcement of this rule.
