VASCO: Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), Vasco, a premier Indian DPSU Shipyard, on Thursday launched the first the first pollution control vessel built for the Indian Coast Guard, at the hands of Neeta Seth in the presence of Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, to the chants of ‘Atharva Veda’.
The GSL is constructing two PSVs for the Indian Coast Guard. It is for the first time that these vessels are being designed and constructed indigenously.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay Seth expressed his happiness to be part of this ceremony and be witness to this milestone event in the history of Indian Coast Guard and the GSL. He said that this project is prestigious not only for GSL but for the entire State and the country. The project is a stepping stone for the Shipyard to construct technologically advanced pollution control vessels which will carry out dedicated oil spill response operations in the EEZ and beyond in the near future. Recent launch of first Frigate of Project 1135.6 by GSL is a testimony to the same and an important part in our journey towards self-reliance, he added.
Upadhyay stated that this prestigious project, Pollution Control Vessel represents our nation’s collective commitment to protect and preserve our marine environment and this launching, marks a momentous occasion both for the Indian Coast Guard and GSL.
The vessel is fitted with two side sweeping arms to contain oilspill whilst in motion, advanced radar system with capability to detect oilspills. The ship is designed to recover the lightest to most viscous oil, pump in the contaminated water, analyse the contaminant, separate the oil and store in storage tanks onboard.
