PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has taken cognisance of the illegal constructions mushrooming across the State as well as apathy of the authorities to act against them and registered a suo motu petition in this regard.
Notices have been issued to the Directorate of Panchayats and the State government in this regards. The suo motu petition was triggered by a case which came before the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Dedvendra Kumar Upadhayaya and Justice B P Deshpande for hearing on Friday wherein the Directorate of Panchayats had failed to act against the illegal constructions and execute demolition orders for over four to five years.
The Court will also examine the problems faced by the citizens of Goa on account of such illegal encroachments and constructions not only in panchayat areas but also in the areas which fall within the jurisdiction of various municipal councils and the Municipal Corporation.
Expressing concern that if such illegalities continue unabated, Goa will be destroyed and half the constructions in the State will turn out to be illegal, and the High Court registered the petition, informed Advocate General Devidas Pangam.
All illegal constructions in both, the government and private properties across the State will come under the purview of the petition. The petition will come for hearing on October 22.
