Khariwado local seek intervention of Guv over ‘misuse’ of open space

VASCO: The residents of Non-Mon Bandar in Khariwado Vasco have sought intervention of Governor Mridula Sinha with the plea to prevent the misuse of open space which acts as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

In a letter signed by 30 residents, it has been pointed out by the residents that they have been enduring vector borne diseases since last many years and all their complaints to the health department over the increase in dengue and malaria cases remain unaddressed.  

“There is an open space (private property) of around 1000 square meter area located behind our houses. The place is currently used for rearing of pigs and all the waste water from the illegal houses on the property get accumulated in this open space and remains stagnant. This site has become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and a lot of people from our area have been afflicted by malaria and dengue. Since the health department failed to act on our complaints, we wrote to Goa Governor as she promotes the Swachh Bharat Mission,” a resident told Herald.

Since a copy of the letter was also marked to the Mormugao municipality, municipal authorities immediately swung into action and a joint site inspection along with health officials was also carried on Friday.

“We have carried out inspection of the site and I have instructed our municipal staffs to issue notice to all the people who have carried out encroachments over the gutters. I have also asked our sanitary inspector to inspect the site and verify how many people have released their waste water into gutters so that action as per law against them can be initiated,” MMC chief Deepak Naik told Herald.
