MMC to set up solar power system at Mapusa vegetable, fish markets

MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council has adopted a resolution to set up solar power system for vegetable and fish markets during a special council meeting on Friday. 

Taking note of the fact that currently, the municipality receives yearly electricity bill of Rs 6.48 lakh, the council estimated that if the solar power system is installed, then, the consumption of electricity will be reduced and consequently, the electricity bill amount too would be reduced.

The cost of the solar power system for electrifying the fish market will be around Rs 14.40 lakh; and for the vegetable market, it would be around Rs 5.76 lakh. The council also observed that the municipality would get a subsidy of 25 percent from GEDC for setting up solar power system.

At the meeting, council had received proposal to undertake development of senior citizen garden at Housing Board, Ganeshpuri, from Ashok Walke Charitable Trust. The proposal was put forward for discussion at the meeting and the council approved to develop 1600 sq mt land under CSR.

The council also resolved to set up a one-tonne capacity plant of suitable technology at three different places within the municipal jurisdiction to reduce the burden on the main treatment plant. The council observed that around 20 tonnes of garbage is generated on daily in Mapusa municipality.

Chairman Ryan Braganza informed that the plan to set up a 5-TPD palnt at Kuchelim has been kept on hold; and as an alternative, the government have approved to set up 1-TPD plants at different spots in the municipal jurisdiction to reduce the burden on the main plant.

The Council also resolved to rehabilitate the 13 kiosks located along Mapusa-Parra road. The council resolved to shift these 13 kiosks in the new shops located at Kadamba bus stand. It was decided that the new shop which are of 16 sq mt size will be divided into two equal parts and these kiosk will be shifted there.
