PORVORIM: The State Legislative Assembly on Wednesday witnessed a ruckus when the Land Revenue Amendment Bill was introduced.
The Bill seeks to amend Section 32 of the Goa Land Revenue Code, 1968, to prevent agricultural land, as defined under the Goa Restriction on Transfer of Agricultural Land Act 2023, from being converted and used for other purposes. This is aimed at protecting agriculture and promoting cultivation.
When the Bill was introduced, the opposition bench demanded a division of votes. MLA Vijai Sardesai alleged that the Bill was brought in to destroy agriculture in the state. However, the Chief Minister said, "We are not giving conversion sanad." Ultimately, the Bill was put to a vote and was passed with 29 MLAs in favour and seven MLAs opposing it.
